The British sci-fi comic "Judge Dredd," which hasn't seen a screen adaptation in quite some time, is reportedly getting a new lease on life. The Hollywood Reporter revealed today that "Judge Dredd," previously adapted in 1995 and 2012, is heading back to the big screen. This time, it will be directed by Taika Waititi, known for helming "Thor" installments three and four, with the screenplay penned by Drew Pearce, writer of "Iron Man 3" and "The Fall Guy." Sources indicate that Waititi and Pearce are longtime friends who have been seeking a project to collaborate on for years.

While details regarding the new film's plot and casting remain under wraps, The Hollywood Reporter suggests that Waititi's version will be more faithful to the original comic books. It is expected to focus heavily on world-building and dark humor, while also functioning as a mainstream commercial blockbuster that reflects current cultural trends. The goal is to launch a shared universe, paving the way for more spin-off films and television series across various platforms.
The 2012 "Judge Dredd" film, starring Karl Urban—who also worked with Waititi on "Thor: Ragnarok"—had intermittent plans for a sequel. Discussions were held with streaming platforms for investment and distribution, and there was even an intention to develop a follow-up TV series, "Judge Dredd: Mega-City One," with Urban in talks to return. However, neither the film sequel nor the series ever materialized, with the TV project reportedly halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
