From his roots as a VOCALOID music producer to becoming one of Japan's hottest artists, Kenshi Yonezu has been absolutely everywhere lately! His music is the undeniable soundtrack to countless films and anime, boasting an infectious energy that knows no bounds.
Case in point: his 2022 opening theme for the anime "Chainsaw Man," titled "KICK BACK," just snagged a major win! The track officially received Platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), marking a historic first for a Japanese song and proving its global reach extends far beyond Asia.

So, what does RIAA Platinum mean? It's all about sales within the U.S., and to hit that coveted Platinum status, a track needs to move over 1 million units. While Japanese artists like Yoko Ono previously earned Gold certification (500,000 units) back in 1984, Yonezu's "KICK BACK" is the very first song with Japanese lyrics to achieve Platinum. Talk about a groundbreaking moment!
"KICK BACK" had already gone Gold in 2023, and now it's officially smashed past the 1 million unit mark to reach Platinum. Yonezu himself shared his excitement, saying, "This is truly an honor. While the creative process had its struggles, looking back, it was a very pure and enjoyable experience, leaving me with wonderful memories."
He also reflected on the passionate response to "KICK BACK" from overseas fans during his world tour earlier this year: "Seeing everyone's enthusiasm firsthand really made me feel the energy this song holds, especially with the boost from 'Chainsaw Man's' popularity abroad, which further amplified its impact."

And the hits keep coming! Yonezu's 2018 track "Lemon" has racked up over 930 million views on its music video to date, setting a new record for a Japanese artist. He now boasts an incredible 16 videos with over 100 million views each.
Last August, his album "LOST CORNER" dropped simultaneously in North America, Europe, and Asia, even landing in the Top 50 on three major U.S. Billboard charts. Domestically, he's the first solo artist in the Reiwa era to have two consecutive albums sell over 500,000 copies. With his ever-growing global presence, Kenshi Yonezu is truly leading the charge for Japanese music on the international stage!
