Japan's renowned prize figure manufacturer Furyu's high-quality character brand F:NEX has announced the commercialization of new figures from "Rebuild of Evangelion" in collaboration with the famous long-established Japanese doll maker Yoshitoku: the "Rei Ayanami Japanese Doll 1/4 Scale Figure" and the "Shikinami Asuka Langley Japanese Doll 1/4 Scale Figure". The release date is yet to be determined.
Located in Asakusa, Tokyo, Yoshitoku is a 300-year-old long-established Japanese doll maker specializing in Hina dolls for Hina Matsuri, Musha dolls (Gogatsu Ningyo) for Children's Day, and various other dolls that showcase traditional Japanese culture. In recent years, they have actively collaborated with popular modern films, anime, and manga to release figure products, integrating their centuries-old craftsmanship into the characters of various works. Their company slogan is "The life of a doll lies in its face" (人形は顔がいのち), emphasizing not only the production of high-quality Kimono or armor but also meticulously imbuing the dolls' faces with soul.
In previous collaborations, F:NEX has faithfully recreated the anime characters' appearances with excellent sculpting prowess in a large 1/4 scale. Yoshitoku, responsible for the fabric Kimonos, had doll artisans assist in designing the elaborate patterns, utilizing techniques found in actual Kimonos such as "Kata Yuzen" dyeing and "Kinran" (gold brocade) made with gold thread embroidery. This brings 300 years of inherited craftsmanship into the exquisite 1/4 scale size, showcasing the charm of anime characters combined with traditional Japanese culture.
Currently, only silhouettes from the design sketches for the "Rei Ayanami Japanese Doll 1/4 Scale Figure" and the "Shikinami Asuka Langley Japanese Doll 1/4 Scale Figure" have been released. The designs of both figures reflect the contrasting personalities of the two characters, one serene and one dynamic, sculpting Rei Ayanami elegantly strolling with a wagasa (Japanese umbrella) and Asuka dancing with a folding fan.
