"Is Just Being Cute Enough?" Nearly 70% of Japanese High Schoolers Say No: "Cute but Empty Inside? Absolutely Not!"

"Is just being cute enough?" (かわいいだけじゃだめですか?) was originally the title of a song by Japanese idol group CUTIE STREET, but it quickly morphed into a popular catchphrase. But seriously, do young people today actually believe that "just being cute isn't enough"?

Recently, "Wakamono Research," a marketing information website exclusively for Japanese high school students, surveyed 479 high schoolers nationwide. The results? A whopping 68.7% answered, "I don't think just being cute is enough." This nearly 70% ratio has sparked quite the buzz among Japanese netizens.

According to Japanese media outlet Livedoornews, the main reasons nearly 70% of high schoolers feel "just cute isn't enough" often revolve around "personality" and "inner qualities":

"Being cute isn't enough; having a good personality is super important."

"Cute face but a terrible personality? Instant deal-breaker."

"If there's no substance, conversations get boring fast."

"Inner qualities and kindness are what truly add value."

Even high schoolers are dishing out some seriously calm and practical takes!

However, the three-tenths of students who answered "I don't think just being cute isn't enough" (aka the "cute is enough" faction) almost unanimously declared: "Cuteness is justice!" Their reasons:

"Cuteness IS justice!"

"Cute people have an advantage in all sorts of situations."

"Life is just happier when you're cute!"

But most netizens argue that "Cuteness is justice!" only really applies to 2D characters or animals. Otherwise, if being cute alone is enough to be forgiven or serve as a baseline, that's just not okay.

Overall, both sides have pretty clear opinions. Of course, this discussion got reignited because of CUTIE STREET's hit song, prompting everyone to rethink the importance of "looks vs. inner qualities." Maybe "Cuteness is justice!" truly is just for the 2D world after all...
