Scottish actor James McAvoy, known for his extensive acting career, is stepping into a new role this year: director. He makes his directorial debut with "California Schemin'," a film that held its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September. Today, the official first trailer and promotional poster (below) have been released.

Penned by Elaine Gracie and Archie Thomson, "California Schemin'" is based on the true story of Scottish hip-hop duo Billy Boyd and Gavin Bain. Full of ambition, the pair ventured to the United States to break into the music industry, only to be ridiculed during auditions for their thick Scottish accents. Unwilling to abandon their dreams, they fabricated new identities and accents, claiming to be from California, and successfully secured a record deal.
The film's ensemble cast includes Amber Anderson, Jennifer Winn, Samuel Bottomley as Boyd, Seamus McLean Ross as Bain, and McAvoy himself. The film is scheduled for release in the UK and Ireland in April 2026.
