Japan's official Mobile Suit Gundam Gunpla flagship store, GUNDAM BASE, has announced that its latest limited-edition product, "BEST MECHA COLLECTION 1/144 RX-78-2 GUNDAM (REVIVAL Ver.) [GUNDAM BASE Color]," is scheduled to be released at stores nationwide starting May 2, 2026.
"BEST MECHA COLLECTION 1/144 RX-78-2 GUNDAM (REVIVAL Ver.)" is a special product released in 2024 to commemorate the 45th anniversary of Gunpla. This product originates from the first Gunpla item, "1/144 GUNDAM," released in July 1980. The old kit from back then was not as convenient to build as modern products. Due to the lack of color separation and snap-fit designs, every part had to be glued together with model cement. The plastic parts also came in a single color, meaning the characteristic red, blue, and yellow colors of Gundam had to be hand-painted. Furthermore, the movable joint design only allowed for stiff movements of the neck and limbs.
Today, modern color separation and part division techniques are used to recreate the origin of this Gunpla. The overall design retains the unique, simple, and animation-like appearance of the old kit, while the overall part division and assembly structure have been redesigned. This allows the originally pure white Gundam to feature rich molded part colors, and joint seams do not appear on the front of the mobile suit. The minimalist movable joint design has not been altered, preserving the original authenticity from back then.
This limited-edition product, "BEST MECHA COLLECTION 1/144 RX-78-2 GUNDAM (REVIVAL Ver.) [GUNDAM BASE Color]," features a change in most of the molded part colors, utilizing dark blue, gray-blue, and white to reproduce the GUNDAM BASE image colors. It also includes GUNDAM BASE LOGO stickers that can be applied to the shoulder armor. Even the box art design, which thoroughly replicates the 1980 product, has been updated to the GUNDAM BASE color scheme.
