Japanese Gunpla Master Revamps a 37-Year-Old Sazabi Kit into a Jaw-Dropping Masterpiece!

If you're into Gunpla, you've probably dabbled in all sorts of customization techniques—painting, cutting, weathering, you name it. There's a whole world of possibilities to explore!

Today, we're shining a spotlight on Japanese Gunpla maestro Jiro Ueda (@jirou19651104). This guy spent two whole years painstakingly transforming an "old kit" Sazabi—a classic from the early days of Gundam models—into a "semi-scratch-built" masterpiece. The insane level of detail makes it almost impossible to believe this started as an ancient kit! His incredible craftsmanship has been blowing minds on X, earning widespread praise from fellow enthusiasts.

The kit he tackled was the "1/144 Sazabi" Gunpla, originally released way back in 1989. These older kits are known for their chunkier parts and simpler designs. But that's exactly why they're a favorite among customizers, boasting a dedicated fanbase in the modeling world.

Ueda poured over two years into making this Sazabi a "semi-scratch-built" project. That means he essentially rebuilt many sections from scratch rather than relying on the original kit's parts. He meticulously adjusted proportions, completely overhauling the mobile suit's components, joints, and overall shape.

After that, it was time for a fresh paint job. You can see how he refined the head and armor, bringing the overall silhouette much closer to modern Gunpla Sazabi designs. The process involved a ton of cutting, putty work, and sanding. Since Ueda could only work on it in his free time after his day job, it naturally took a significant chunk of time to complete.

The final, fully painted Sazabi boasts razor-sharp lines and incredible three-dimensionality—it looks absolutely nothing like an old kit. The detailing is off the charts, truly a "divine work." Dedicating over two years to this project is a testament to his sheer willpower.

With its weapons attached, it's genuinely mind-boggling to think this finished product was built upon a vintage kit from 1989. Comparing the before and after, it's practically two entirely different models—a truly monumental modification!

Ueda himself mused, "While I'm really happy with the finished product, honestly, the strongest feeling is 'It's finally done!'" For him, while customizing old kits is undoubtedly laborious and time-consuming, that unique challenge is precisely what makes them so enjoyable. He finds the satisfaction of breathing new life into a classic far more rewarding than building modern Gunpla.
