Illustrator NAGANO's hit series "Chiikawa" has taken the world by storm. After its anime debut, its unique charm captivated audiences, leading to an explosion of merchandise and solidifying its status as a pop culture phenomenon.
On May 7th, NAGANO dropped a new illustration on X that immediately sent fans into a frenzy. The art clearly parodied the upcoming film "Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu," a continuation of "The Mandalorian" series. Comments flooded in, with users exclaiming, "A dream crossover!" and "Totally get which movie this is referencing!"
The new illustration features "Chiikawa's" Armor Guy carrying Goblin on his back. Accompanying the image is a Romanized phrase: "EIGADAKE MITEMO NAIYO WAKARU?" (which translates to "Will you understand the story just by watching the movie?"). Noticeably, some of the letters in the phrase sport a green gradient.
Fans immediately recognized the uncanny resemblance to the movie poster for "Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu," set to premiere simultaneously in Japan and the US on May 22nd (May 21st in Taiwan). That poster famously features the armored Din Djarin/The Mandalorian carrying the green Grogu, complete with a similar green gradient in its logo. The compositional parallels between NAGANO's art and the official movie poster are undeniable.
The phrase "Will you understand the story just by watching the movie?" is also seen as a clever jab at "The Mandalorian" series, which already has three seasons under its belt. It playfully questions whether newcomers who haven't followed the show will grasp the plot if they jump straight into the movie. This unexpected mashup sent fans into an absolute frenzy.
Netizens couldn't get enough, commenting, "It's just Armor Guy and Goblin, but it's hilarious how you instantly know which movie it is LOL!" and "The colors and character pairing are just too cute!" Naturally, many fans are now hoping for an official collaboration – talk about a surefire way to open wallets!
While there's no official collaboration in the works, NAGANO's ability to convey such a clear message using only his own characters truly showcases the unique charm of the "NAGANO-verse."
