"The Expendabelles," the long-gestating female-led spin-off of "The Expendables" franchise, has unexpectedly gained significant momentum. The project, once considered defunct, was officially announced as revived at the Cannes Film Market, with producers actively seeking investors, distributors, and creative teams for writing and directing.

Jeffrey Greenstein, President of Millennium Media (pictured below), a co-producer of "The Expendables" series, admitted four years ago that they struggled to find a compelling rationale for an all-female team. However, it appears they have now found their angle.

In 2014, Robert Luketic, director of "Legally Blonde," was initially attached to direct "The Expendabelles." The original concept involved a group of female operatives posing as escorts to rescue a kidnapped nuclear scientist, but this idea has since been abandoned. The preliminary concept for the new script is that the first film will serve as an origin story for the female Expendables team, set in the late 1990s amidst the Y2K crisis and geopolitical instability. The exact plot details, however, have not yet been revealed.
