Get ready for some colossal action! Manga artist Hiroya Oku's hit series, "GIGANT," officially announced today (May 18) that it's getting an anime film adaptation. The project will be helmed by the fresh-faced animation studio K2 Pictures, marking their very first anime film endeavor. While the hype is real, a release date is still under wraps.

"GIGANT" originally ran in "Big Comic Superior" from 2018 and wrapped up its run in 2021, collecting its wild story across 10 tankōbon volumes.
The bonkers premise follows high schooler Rei Yokoyamada, an aspiring director. One day, while tearing down defamatory posters targeting his beloved AV actress, PAPICO (Chiyo Johnson), he actually meets her! Things take a bizarre turn after a traffic accident where a mysterious old man places a strange device on PAPICO's wrist. Suddenly, PAPICO transforms into a doll-like state and discovers she can use the device to enlarge her body! But the real chaos begins when a colossal "God of Destruction" descends from the sky, wreaking havoc on Tokyo. Now, PAPICO and Rei must team up to face this unpredictable disaster.

Here's a fun tidbit: back when "GIGANT" was still in serialization, Hiroya Oku himself jokingly told his editors that he thought "this series might be impossible to adapt into anime or any other format." Talk about eating your words! Years later, it's actually happening on the big screen, and even Oku-sensei admits it's "no small feat" for an animation studio to take on such a challenging project.

K2 Pictures made this exciting announcement for the "GIGANT" anime film at the Cannes International Film Festival. Details are still scarce, so fans will have to stay tuned for more official updates!
