This Fan-Made "Sakuga Collapse" Gundam Model Is a Hilarious Throwback to the Original Anime's Wobbly Animation!

Many Gundam fans are no doubt familiar with the original Mobile Suit Gundam TV anime. Nearly 50 years old, the series left an indelible mark, and of course, its infamous "sakuga collapse" moments (aka animation errors) are still a beloved topic of discussion.

Enter X (formerly Twitter) user 104模型用アカ (@NpPAkSVxprT5dFj), a Gunpla wizard known for their hilarious creations. They've crafted an "Off-Model Original Gundam" based on a specific scene from the anime's 10th episode, perfectly capturing that wonderfully weird and goofy look that fans still adore.

This particular Zaku (and the wonky Gundam) hails from episode 10, "Garma's Death." Due to the inconsistent animation quality of the era, this scene gave us a bizarrely shaped, distorted RX-78-2, which has since become an iconic example of the series' "sakuga collapse."

To bring this "Off-Model Original Gundam" to life, 104模型用アカ started with a 3D-printed base, then sculpted and refined it to match the anime's peculiar proportions.

The weapons were sourced from a 1/144 weapon kit's Zaku bazooka, while the Gundam's backpack was scratch-built from plastic plates. The beam saber is a 2mm plastic rod, and the exhaust ports and facial grooves were crafted using Evergreen plastic sheets. Even the hands got a custom touch, modified from candy toy parts.

Once painted, the model perfectly mirrors the anime's distorted aesthetic. The creator even joked that since it's meant to be a comedic, satirical piece, the build was a bit "sloppy" but incredibly fun!

Despite its humorous intent, this wonky RX-78-2 still boasts detachable weapons.

A closer look at the arms reveals their slightly rough, rubbery texture, hinting at their candy toy origins.

The bazooka's segmented look was cleverly achieved using simple straws, showcasing how basic materials can create impressive details.

And those exhaust ports? They're made from grooved Evergreen plastic sheets, adding to the model's distinct charm.

What's even cooler is that we previously featured another X user, ToMoS (@ToMoS_Qkit), who created an "oddly drawn" Mass Production Zaku model. Both creators are participating in the recent "Kyū Kit Banpaku 2026" event in Japan. 104模型用アカ playfully posed their Gundam next to ToMoS's Zaku, recreating that legendary anime scene!

Though, let's be real, the Zaku is still a bit bigger in terms of scale. Oh well!

What do you think of this creative approach? Isn't it awesome to turn the "animation quirks" of classic anime into unique Gunpla builds? Perhaps this could spark some inspiration for your next Gunpla project – why not try building something in this wonderfully wobbly style?
