New Theatrical Film "Expelled from Paradise: Resonance of the Heart" Confirms Return of Protagonist Angela, Releasing This November After a Decade!

Directed by Seiji Mizushima and penned by Gen Urobuchi, the 2014 animated film "Expelled from Paradise", a collaboration between Toei Animation and Nitro+, captivated audiences with its unique blend of cosmic and sci-fi world-building. Earlier in 2024, the announcement of a brand-new theatrical anime, ">"Expelled from Paradise: Resonance of the Heart" (Japanese title: 楽園追放 心のレゾナンス), sent fans into a frenzy, eagerly anticipating this long-awaited sequel after a decade.

Set to hit theaters on November 13, 2026, "Expelled from Paradise: Resonance of the Heart" dropped some fresh intel today, September 12. In a cinema-exclusive trailer, it was officially confirmed that the protagonist from the previous film, Angela Balzac (voiced by Rie Kugimiya), will be making a grand return, much to the delight of fans.

The 2014 anime film "Expelled from Paradise" depicted a future where, after a catastrophic "Nano Hazard" devastated Earth's ecosystem, 98% of humanity shed their physical bodies. Their consciousnesses were digitized and transferred to the virtual data space of the space station "Deva," located at the Earth-Moon L1 point. When a mysterious entity named "Frontier Setter" repeatedly hacked into Deva, the authorities dispatched special agent Angela Balzac to return to the surface in a newly regenerated physical body to investigate.

After meeting up with her ground-based assistant, Dingo, Angela's investigation revealed that the worlds of Deva and Earth were far more complex than she had imagined. Her perspective on the surface dwellers gradually shifted as she uncovered deeper secrets.

During the "Aniplex One Focus 2026" news program, which aired on September 12, the cinema-exclusive trailer for "Expelled from Paradise: Resonance of the Heart" was unveiled. This trailer, which had only been shown in select Japanese cinemas since August 28, officially confirmed Angela Balzac's appearance in the new film.

At the end of the preview, the program also featured a video message from Rie Kugimiya, Angela's voice actress. Kugimiya expressed her joy, stating, "I recently finished recording for this project, and I'm truly thrilled to be able to play this character again." The exact nature of Angela's involvement in the latest installment remains a tantalizing mystery, leaving fans eager for more details.

The official team also dropped the story synopsis for the film:

"Do you know Angela Balzac?"

In A.D. 2400, humanity abandoned their physical bodies and Earth, choosing to live in the cyber world of Deva. It all began with the hacker "Frontier Setter," which led to Deva investigator Angela Balzac's rebellion.

During that incident, many Security Bureau agents who were hacked by Angela fled to the surface, their physical bodies and personal data storage hardware taken with them. Concealing their identities and existence in the surface world, they eventually became a threat to Deva. Those brought to Earth by Angela are known as the "Fallen".

Upon receiving a search order from Deva, agents like Gabriel begin tracking down the true identities of the Fallen. Facing the lingering effects of the "Nano Hazard" still present on Earth, can they overcome these obstacles to find the Fallen and the truth hidden behind them? The story of "Expelled from Paradise" now begins to turn once more.

The official channels have also dropped five brand-new character visuals, freshly drawn by Toei Animation, showcasing the main cast. First up, revealed on September 12, is the visual for the protagonist, Gabriel (ガブリエル), who stands tall and proud with her arms crossed.
