Singer milet Reveals Depression Diagnosis Led to Four-Month Hiatus, Felt Her "Body and Mind Had Reached Their Limit"

Popular singer milet, who debuted in 2019 with her single "inside you" and quickly rose to fame with her unique voice and fluent bilingual English-Japanese singing style, performed at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics closing ceremony and has sung theme songs for many popular anime, including "Ranking of Kings," "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End," and "Demon Slayer: Swordsmith Village Arc."

On the NTV music program "Yoru no Oto -TOKYO MIDNIGHT MUSIC-" aired on the 15th, milet revealed the reason behind her hiatus in 2025, admitting that she had been diagnosed with depression and had to suspend her activities to recover.

The program highlighted milet's sudden announcement on April 1, 2025, that she would be going on hiatus. At the time, she only stated that she needed time to rest, eventually returning in August of the same year after a four-month break.

When asked why she decided to take a break, she revealed changes in her physical condition: "For five or six years after my debut, I kept pushing forward without ever stopping to look back. I was constantly going full throttle, writing and singing songs. But about a year before my hiatus, my body gradually started to lose its ability to move freely."

She then candidly stated: "After going to the hospital, I was told it was depression. That's when I realized that I could also get depression. I heard that one of the symptoms is that your body might become unable to move, even speaking becomes difficult, to the point where I couldn't even get out of bed."

She also revealed that this condition even prevented her from participating in music festivals she really wanted to perform at. "Eventually, both my mind and body reached their limits, and our team decided, 'It's better to take a break.' So, I ended up suspending my activities and got some time off."

milet also took this opportunity to share her journey leading up to the hiatus. She explained that while she works with a team and is deeply involved in production and performances, saying, "I really enjoy doing these things with my staff; it makes me very happy."

However, she also confessed: "But every time I step on stage, I still feel like I'm alone. I become acutely aware that 'I have to sing by myself.' Perhaps, without realizing it, I naturally felt a certain kind of pressure."

Speaking about her hiatus, milet said she often felt anxious. "During that time, I saw many musicians who debuted the same year as me releasing new songs one after another, some even becoming huge hits or going viral, and I would think, 'Am I really going to be okay like this?'"

Reflecting on her feelings at the time, she said: "Even though I really wanted to sing, I couldn't release new songs and had to stop. The conflicting feeling of wanting to sing but being unable to was incredibly strong then."

Although it was only a short four-month break, encountering depression is indeed a problem many people face today. However, milet's ability to recover her mental and physical state and return to the stage must be a great relief for her fans.
