To celebrate Director Anno's birthday on May 22nd, Japan's GOOD SMILE COMPANY has released the latest product in its popular "Nendoroid" series, which boasts over a thousand different items. This new release, "Nendoroid Kantoku-kun," is based on Hideaki Anno's anime work "Kantoku Fuyuki Todoki" (The Insufficient Director). It has a suggested retail price of 6,500 JPY and is scheduled for release in October 2023.
"Kantoku Fuyuki Todoki" is an essay manga by Moyoco Anno, adapted from real-life events, and is a lighthearted and humorous work that was also adapted into an anime in 2014. The story depicts the daily married life between popular manga artist "Baby-chan" (Moyoco Anno) and the animation industry's giant, known as one of the "Four Heavenly Kings of Japanese Otaku," "Kantoku-niisan" (Hideaki Anno). It also illustrates how Kantoku-niisan embarks on "otaku-fication education" for Baby-chan, guiding his wife down the vast and boundless path of the otaku wife.
The "Nendoroid Kantoku-kun" stands approximately 10 cm tall, faithfully recreating the Q-version portrayal of the Otaku Four Heavenly Kings, Kantoku-kun, from the manga. His messy hair, stubble, and slightly plump uncle-like physique are all adorably reproduced. It comes with three classic facial expressions from the series: the "relaxed face," the "smiling face" when he sees otaku items, and the "serious face" when he's dressed as Kamen Rider. These can be combined with a rich array of interchangeable hand parts, such as crossed arms, a V-sign, or a hand stroking his chin in thought, allowing for various scene recreations. And of course, his wife, "Baby-chan," is also included!
