Pokémon Center, the official Pokémon merchandise specialty store in Japan, recently announced the latest "Hyper Beam" themed merchandise, featuring six three-dimensional display figures including Dragonite, Snorlax, Porygon, Gyarados, Aerodactyl, and Tauros. These will be available for purchase starting March 16, 2024, at all Pokémon Centers and the Pokémon Center Online.
Hyper Beam is one of the powerful Normal-type moves, boasting an immense power of 150, but renders the user immobile on the following turn. However, in the first generation games, Pokémon Red/Green/Blue/Yellow, if the attack successfully knocks out the opponent, this drawback is nullified. This made it particularly formidable when used by the Wild Bull Pokémon, Tauros. As a Normal-type, Tauros's Hyper Beam receives a 1.5x Same-Type Attack Bonus (STAB), and combined with its excellent base stats of 100 Attack and 110 Speed, along with moves like Blizzard, Earthquake, and Thunderbolt, it was considered almost on par with Mewtwo as the strongest Pokémon in the first generation.
The six Pokémon figures released this time continue the main visual illustration from the "Hyper Beam" series merchandise launched late last year. Each of the six Pokémon is sculpted in a three-dimensional form based on the illustration's pose, with bases designed to reflect their settings and types. For instance, Porygon emerges from an electronic device, while Gyarados rides a surging wave, resulting in incredibly cool designs. Although they don't feature the energy sphere of the Hyper Beam as depicted in the original artwork, the official images show that the translucent effect of the base can create a similar charging effect.
