Japan's BANDAI SPIRITS Collectors Division TAMASHII NATIONS will hold a commemorative exhibition at TAMASHII NATIONS STORE TOKYO from May 10, 2024, to July 1, 2024, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the "Chogokin" series. During the exhibition, a commemorative limited-edition product from the "Evangelion" series, the "METAL BUILD EVANGELION EVA-01 CHOGOKIN 50th Exclusive," will also be released. The "Chogokin" series toys, born in February 1974, were toy products launched by POPY, the predecessor of TAMASHII NATIONS. Its most distinctive feature was the use of zinc alloy material to create robot characters from Japanese animation, presenting a mechanical texture and a satisfying sense of weight during play. The manufacturing techniques cultivated by "Chogokin" later led to the development of popular alloy toy products such as "Chogokin Damashii," "DX Chogokin," "METAL BUILD," and "Kaitei Shouki."
Designed by Ikuto Yamashita (山下いくと), the "METAL BUILD EVANGELION EVA-01" was conceived with the concept of "a giant with steel muscles" and combined with the characteristics of the METAL BUILD series. Its body proportions are similar to the human body, with multiple joints such as elbows, hips, and knees made of alloy material. Coupled with delicate metallic paintwork, the overall skeleton and muscles present a mechanical texture composed of various metals, completely transforming the original impression of a "humanoid" made of flesh. Its excellent alloy movable joints, armor design closer to a "weapon," and innovative weaponry have all been highly praised since its release.
This Chogokin 50th Anniversary edition replaces the main body's colors, utilizing plating, clear, and metallic colors to layer multiple textures, creating a purple-toned appearance distinct from the original. The impressive 39 cm long weapon, the "Spear of Longinus," is also entirely rendered in striking electroplated red parts. Other armaments included are an electromagnetic rifle, a high-vibration particle knife, and an umbilical cable. The display base, which can store the weapons, has also been changed to a black base with the Chogokin 50th Anniversary LOGO printed on it.
