Japan's BANDAI SPIRITS Company HOBBY Division recently announced the latest product from the "Macross" series of "HG (High Grade) 1/100 scale" plastic model kits, the "HG 1/100 VF-22S Sturmvogel II (Gamlin Kizaki's Unit)" from "Macross 7," scheduled for release in September 2024. This product will only be sold exclusively on the official BANDAI website PREMIUM BANDAI.
During the "Macross Plus" era, the YF-21 Sturmvogel, which competed with the YF-19 Excalibur for the next-generation main mass-production fighter, though defeated, did not disappear into the currents of history. Instead, it was redeveloped into the special operations unit "VF-22." This unit largely abolished the brainwave-controlled BDI system, instead using it as an auxiliary system, and redesigned the cockpit structure to be suitable for manual operation. The VF-22S that later appeared in "Macross 7" is a commander's unit with enhanced communication functions, including Special Forces "Diamond Force" leader Gamlin Kizaki, and the couple Max and Milia, who all piloted this unit.
The "HG 1/100 VF-22S Sturmvogel II (Gamlin Kizaki's Unit)" is a modification of the previously released YF-21 kit, utilizing new parts and molding colors to recreate the characteristic head, waist, and cockpit designs of the VF-22S. The cockpit canopy is also made with clear red polarized molded parts, reproducing the distinctive jet-black color scheme of Gamlin Kizaki's unit. The markings on the entire fuselage are reproduced using new stickers with aluminum vapor deposition on PET film, featuring extreme thinness, high opacity, and vibrant color reproduction.
By replacing some parts, it can reproduce the three forms: FIGHTER, GERWALK, and BATTROID, and includes clear green molded jet effect parts that can be used in each form to display high-speed flight scenes. In BATTROID form, it features flexible articulated joint designs, allowing for dynamic battle scenes with various interchangeable hand parts and the GUNPOD. It can even use parts from the YF-21 to recreate the model-original VF-22 version of the "Limiter Release Mode," and can also equip the sound booster from the separately sold "VF-19 Kai Fire Valkyrie."
