Released by the HOBBY Division of Japan's BANDAI SPIRITS Co., Ltd., the 'RG (Real Grade)' Gunpla series, which incorporates exterior armor, internal frames, interlocking armor, and new technologies into the 1/144 scale, today officially unveiled the full details of its latest product from 'Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY', the "RG 1/144 Akatsuki Gundam (Oowashi Pack)", scheduled for release in December 2024.
The ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam is the flagship MS of the Orb military, constructed by the Orb state-owned enterprise "Morgenroete Inc.". This mobile suit was designed based on data from the "GAT-X105 Strike Gundam", sharing a very similar silhouette, and also adopting a backpack exchange system similar to the "Striker Pack", allowing it to swap between the "Oowashi Pack" for atmospheric use and the "Shiranui Pack" for space. The Akatsuki places significant emphasis on its defense system; its dazzling golden coating is not merely decorative, but rather the beam-reflecting mirror armor "Yata no Kagami", which allows it to remain virtually unscathed even when hit by a battleship-mounted "Positron Cannon". However, the construction cost of this unit was extremely high, leading to the project being frozen after the prototype was completed in C.E. 71, though Morgenroete Inc. secretly completed it with the latest technology.
The "RG 1/144 Akatsuki Gundam (Oowashi Pack)" integrates intricate sculpting, part separation, and color separation into the 1/144 scale. The entire mobile suit features three different shades of gold-plated exterior armor parts, and through multi-faceted shaping, adjusts the light reflection angles, allowing the "Yata no Kagami" coating on its surface to exhibit a brilliant luster. The movable inner frame reuses some parts from the Strike Gundam, and combined with pull-out shoulder joints, torso side-sway, interlocking armor mechanisms in the limbs, and movable nozzle designs on the shoulders and legs, it offers extremely flexible articulation.
Its armaments include a beam rifle, shield, and beam sabers. The "Oowashi Pack" on the back also features intricate sculpting to recreate its cool thruster structure and can be separated from the main body for individual display. Multiple areas, including the nose and beam cannons, feature deployment mechanisms. The multi-stage articulation of the main wings allows for free changes in its silhouette, and when combined with the Akatsuki Gundam, it can recreate the firing pose of holding two "Type 73F Kai High-Energy Beam Cannons".
Furthermore, Bandai also plans to release another backpack equipment set, the "RG 1/144 Akatsuki Gundam Shiranui Pack", on PREMIUM BANDAI at a later date. In addition to recreating the Akatsuki Gundam's space-use specifications, it also includes "Gourai Striker Pack Connection Parts", allowing it to link with the Gourai Striker Pack included with the "HG 1/144 Destiny Gundam SpecⅡ & Gourai Striker Pack".
