Danish toy company LEGO's Ideas series officially unveiled its latest product, item number 21357, "Disney Pixar Luxo Jr." yesterday (8th)! It is scheduled for release on June 1, 2025, with a suggested retail price of US$69.99.
Pixar Animation Studios' 1986 production, "Luxo Jr.", is an animated short film only 2.5 minutes long, depicting the charming story of two desk lamps, one large (Luxo) and one small (Luxo Jr.), interacting with a rubber ball. It not only fully demonstrated captivating light and shadow changes, but the lamps' skeletal joints and wire movements were also remarkably fluid. Furthermore, even without a single line of dialogue throughout the film, audiences could clearly perceive the distinct personalities of the two lamps. The mischievous Luxo Jr. from the film has now become a highly significant classic symbol.
The original design for this set comes from British LEGO fan Toby Brett, who created the adorable Luxo Jr. and its ball using 224 pieces. Initially designed digitally, Toby later opted to build with physical bricks to overcome stability issues. The officially modified version consists of 613 pieces, standing approximately 22 cm tall when assembled. Noticeable differences in part selection can be seen in the lampshade, frame, and base. Particularly, the lampshade uses a special, more integrated piece, the base is fuller, and the construction method for the frame is highly anticipated.
Next, let's look at that classic ball! Its shape, appearance, and construction method are very similar to Toby Brett's original design. In addition to being able to remove the two curved pieces to use the ball as a stand for Luxo Jr., the LEGO official website also mentions that the ball will contain surprise Easter eggs from animated films such as "Up", "The Incredibles", "Monsters, Inc.", "Ratatouille", "Finding Nemo", and "Toy Story"! It seems we'll just have to buy it, build it ourselves, and enjoy the discovery.
