X-PLUS Co., Ltd. (株式会社エクスプラス) of Japan has announced a new product based on the popular anime "Neon Genesis Evangelion"—the "Rei Ayanami" 1/8 scale plastic model kit. With a suggested retail price of 7,700 JPY, pre-orders will open on the Shonen RIC official website at 17:00 JST on January 29, 2026, with an estimated release in June 2026!
Rei Ayanami, pilot of Evangelion Unit-00, is the heroine designed by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, who was responsible for the EVA character designs. She was based on a character from his previous manga work, "Kotou no Oni" (孤島の鬼), and drawn according to Anno's script prompts. In Anno's concept, she represents the unconscious part of Shinji's mind and is one of the objects of Shinji's Oedipus complex.
This 1/8 scale plastic model kit has an overall completed height of approximately 40 cm, with Rei Ayanami herself standing about 20 cm tall. Inspired by her ethereal image holding the Lance of Longinus under the moonlight, the kit features background elements from the series, such as steep rock walls and corroded faucets. The sculpting meticulously recreates the graceful curves of her body, tightly clad in her plugsuit, and the intricate details of both the plugsuit and the Lance are faithfully reproduced! The model's color separation is achieved through the molded colors of the parts, while the eyes on the face feature tampo printing.
