MEDICOM TOY, the renowned Japanese toy manufacturer known for its "BE@RBRICK" series that reinterprets various IP characters into unique collectible forms, is set to release new figures in January 2022. This latest collection features the iconic ukiyo-e masterpiece "Soma no Furudairi" by the legendary artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and will be available as a "100% & 400% Set" alongside a colossal "1000%" version!
Utagawa Kuniyoshi was a prolific ukiyo-e artist during Japan's Edo period, celebrated for his diverse works including landscapes, beautiful women, and warrior prints. A devoted cat lover, he also created numerous cat paintings and anthropomorphic feline characters that humorously depicted daily life. Veteran Japanese toy maker Kaiyodo has previously released toys based on Kuniyoshi's art, such as the "Utagawa Kuniyoshi's Cat Ukiyo-e Museum" and "Utagawa Kuniyoshi's Goldfish Banquet" series.
The yokai-themed "Soma no Furudairi" is one of Utagawa Kuniyoshi's most iconic works. This new BE@RBRICK release faithfully captures the painting's key elements, including the colossal skeleton, the onmyoji Takiyasha-hime wielding a scroll, and the battling warriors Arakawamaru and Oya no Taro Mitsukuni. The reverse side of the figure even features Kuniyoshi's art name, "Ichi-yusai." This fusion of modern BE@RBRICK aesthetics with ancient ukiyo-e yokai art creates a truly striking and distinctive collectible.
