Uncharted Dominates Global Box Office, Tom Holland Reveals How He Landed the Nathan Drake Role Over Lunch, Mark Wahlberg Calls Him a "Gamer"

The film "Uncharted" recently achieved impressive box office success in Europe and the Middle East. Last week, it debuted in Taiwan with NT$28 million, securing the top spot at the local box office. Furthermore, its US opening weekend grossed an impressive US$51 million, making it the number one film nationwide. Both Taiwan and the US saw "Uncharted" set new records for the highest opening weekend box office in 2022. The good news continued globally, with the film topping the charts in 42 new markets last weekend, bringing its worldwide total to US$106.4 million. This global opening surpassed "Dune" by 6%, led "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" by 13%, and soared past "Free Guy" by 248%. Meanwhile, another Tom Holland-led film, "Spider-Man: No Way Home," has also broken NT$497 million at the Taiwanese box office. In the US, it has surpassed "Avatar" to become the third highest-grossing film in history, with its global box office reaching US$1.83 billion, making it the sixth highest-grossing film worldwide. With consecutive outstanding box office performances late last year and early this year, Tom Holland has solidified his status as a Hollywood superstar.

Tom Holland's connection to "Uncharted" actually began during the filming of "Spider-Man: Homecoming." He shared, "I was shooting 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' at the time, and one of the perks of working with Sony is that they always have the latest PlayStation® consoles in the actors' trailers. One of the games available then was 'Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.' My friend Harrison Osterfield and I would play it between takes. I found the fourth installment so enjoyable that I ended up buying the previous games to catch up." His journey to becoming the real Nathan Drake, however, unfolded during a lunch with Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman. Holland recounted, "I was having lunch with Tom and brought up an idea about making an original story for Nathan Drake. Tom then told me, 'You know what? I have an even better idea: why don't you play Nathan Drake!' We both thought it was a fantastic idea right then and there, and decided to make the movie!"

Mark Wahlberg also commented on Tom Holland's perfect fit for the role, stating, "It was a pleasure working with Tom Holland; he's incredibly suited for this character because he's a gamer — no pun intended. He's willing to try anything and is game for anything. I've also embraced playing a more mature and respected mentor." Holland added, "What you see on screen is exactly how we are off-screen. I'm like the young newcomer in Hollywood, and Mark is the godfather; he's been acting longer than I've been alive! Mark would demonstrate things for me first, allowing me to bring out my best and see what I could achieve. It's truly exciting to see Mark and I have already synchronized into Sully and Nathan!"
