Issued by TAMASHII NATIONS, the collector's toy division of Japan's BANDAI SPIRITS Company, the 'METAL ROBOT Damashii' series, which combines metallic texture painting and an alloy frame, today announced the latest product from "Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ", the 'METAL ROBOT Damashii (Ka signature) Prototype ZZ Gundam', scheduled for release in February 2024.
In its setting, the MSZ-009 Prototype ZZ Gundam is an experimental machine born from the 'Z Project' jointly developed by the AEUG and Anaheim Electronics, used to test the transformation and combination mechanism of the Z Gundam's successor, the 'ZZ Gundam'. The biggest difference between this machine and the ZZ Gundam is the absence of a Core Fighter, as it is formed solely by the combination of the "G-Top Fighter 0" and "G-Bottom Fighter 0". Its extremely heavy armor and the two beam cannons on its back were already formed at this stage, but the characteristic head armament "High-Output Mega Cannon" and the "Twin Beam Rifle" on its right arm would only be equipped in the subsequent B-type modification.
The 'METAL ROBOT Damashii (Ka signature) Prototype ZZ Gundam' is a finished model where mechanical designer KATOKI HAJIME reinterpreted various mechanisms based on Kunio Okawara's original design. Its internal movable frame is made of numerous alloy parts, featuring precise articulation and transformation/combination mechanisms. The exterior armor boasts a highly substantial paint finish, utilizing multiple colors and tampo printing to reproduce the white, blue, black, and yellow armor tones, the color separation inside the thrusters, and the various body markings throughout the entire machine. The abundance of details makes it incredibly cool.
Although it is a compact product with a total height of approximately 15 cm, its transformation and combination mechanism is extremely precise, allowing it to transform from a fighter into a mobile suit essentially without part swapping. However, perhaps to pave the way for its future use as the ZZ Gundam, this prototype model includes designs not yet implemented in its original setting, such as a "Core Fighter" and "Twin Beam Rifle". In addition to reproducing weapons only found in the B-type, it can also transform into the "G-Fortress" form, which only appeared in the later ZZ Gundam!
