BANDAI SPIRITS Company's HOBBY Division in Japan has announced the latest product from the 'HG (High Grade)' robot plastic model series, the "HG 1/100 YF-21" from "Macross Plus", scheduled for release in January 2024.
The YF-21 Sturmvogel, along with the YF-19 Excalibur, was a product of the "AVF (Advanced Variable Fighter)" development project. This aircraft, developed by General Galaxy, incorporated ambitious new technologies such as a new powerful engine and shape-shifting composite materials. The most striking feature was the "BDI System," a technology that directly connected the pilot's brain to the aircraft, allowing control of various functions via brainwaves, and even projecting a full 360-degree view of the surroundings without needing to open one's eyes. However, if the pilot's mental state became unstable, control could become erratic. Furthermore, due to high manufacturing costs, difficult maintenance, and insufficient reliability of the new technologies, the YF-21 lost out to the YF-19 developed by Shinsei Industry in the competition for the main mass-production fighter.
The "HG 1/100 YF-21" continues the design specifications of the HG Macross series, utilizing the HG series' increasingly excellent color separation, part division, and articulation designs from recent years. It uses deep blue, gray, and yellow molding colors to recreate the YF-21's distinctive cool styling. It also features a simple three-stage transformation mechanism that maintains both articulation and strength, allowing for the recreation of FIGHTER, GERWALK, and BATTROID forms by replacing some parts. It can even recreate the "Limiter Release Mode," which famously created the 'legendary five seconds' missile evasion scene!
The transparent cockpit canopy is made with a special polarized molding color. The markings across the entire fuselage are recreated using new stickers featuring aluminum vapor deposition on PET film, characterized by their extreme thinness, high opacity, and vibrant color. For articulation, designs such as multi-axis movement within the chest and pull-out shoulder joints provide extremely dynamic poseability. Accessories include a GUNPOD, landing gear, various hand parts, and effect parts to recreate the "Pin-Point Barrier Punch".
