Do you miss the food stall carts (yatai) where you enjoyed ramen by the roadside during your travels in Japan? Japanese gashapon toy manufacturer 「J.DREAM」 will once again release a mini model gashapon toy themed after pushcart yatai, the 「Rearcar Yatai Mascot 2」, in January 2024. Each model is expected to retail for 500 Japanese Yen.

In Taiwan, roadside snacks are a popular choice for many to feast upon. Although the dining environment may not be as refined as a restaurant, they often offer surprisingly delicious flavors at affordable prices. The Japanese term 「Yatai」(やたい) actually refers to the same concept as our roadside stalls. These food carts often sell a variety of delicious items, such as ramen, oden, and more. As for 「Rearcar」, it is a Japanese-invented term combining the English words 'Rear' and 'Car,' typically referring to vehicles pulled by human or animal power. In Chinese, it is generally called a 'load cart' (荷車), also known as a 'rickshaw' (人力車) or 'handcart' (手推車).
This second series of pushcart yatai gashapon toys from J.DREAM miniaturizes and charmingly renders Japan's yatai pushcarts, featuring a total of 5 designs, each approximately 7.5 cm wide. These include Chuka Soba (中華そば), Oden (おでん), Warabi Mochi (わらび餅), Roasted Sweet Potato (石焼き芋), and Tofu (とうふ). Each design features a unique signboard style. The most special feature is that each model can produce sound; pressing a button will trigger familiar vendor calls or bell sounds. Friends who wish to relive their memories of Japan travel might consider adding these to their collection.
