TAMASHII NATIONS, the collector's toy division of Japan's BANDAI SPIRITS Co., Ltd., has officially announced the latest product from its popular die-cast toy series "METAL BUILD": the "Kämpfer" from "Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket," slated for release in February 2024.
In the late stages of the One Year War, facing the Federation's deployment of numerous mass-produced mobile suits, the Principality of Zeon, at a disadvantage, sought to develop various new mobile suits, constantly exploring ways to counter them. One such development was the "MS-18E Kämpfer," the last assault-type prototype completed by the Zeon military before the end of the war. Although this machine was developed by reinforcing the Zaku's frame, generator, and propulsion system, its overall design heavily specialized in close-quarters combat performance. It was equipped with high-thrust thrusters and attitude control nozzles throughout its body, allowing it to lean forward and glide at high speeds, performing hit-and-run assault missions with extremely high mobility and firepower. However, the trade-off was its relatively thin, lightweight armor, which was easily riddled like a beehive by the Gundam NT-1's 90mm Gatling gun.
The "METAL BUILD Kämpfer" is thoroughly supervised by its original designer, Yutaka Izubuchi. Standing at 18 cm tall and constructed from ABS, PVC, and die-cast materials, it builds upon the original azure curved armor design, incorporating intricate mechanical structures that could not be fully depicted in the anime. The internal frame features meticulously crafted joints, power conduits, and thruster nozzles, while the exterior armor boasts extensive new part divisions and panel line engravings, finished with multi-tonal blue color applications. Furthermore, it includes retractable main thruster mechanisms and the memorable articulated head antenna from the series, significantly enhancing its detail density and layering.
The weapon accessories are even more luxurious, utilizing METAL BUILD's signature metallic texture and intricate detailing to create two Sturm Fausts, two Shotguns, two Giant Bazookas, and two Heat Hawks. It also faithfully reproduces the storage and deployment mechanisms for the beam sabers on the side skirts. The back features an original weapon, the "Portable Mine Whip Storage Rack," which has deployable side compartments to store the astonishingly long "Mine Whip." With the movable support arm at the bottom, the storage rack can be raised, allowing for dynamic poses of the Kämpfer drawing its whip!
