The non-articulated plastic assembly model kit series "ARTPLA", launched by Japanese model manufacturer Kaiyodo, showcased a prototype of its latest product, "Godzilla Re:Imagination", from the 1954 film "Godzilla" at the "63rd Shizuoka Hobby Show". It is scheduled for official release in October 2025.
The First Generation Godzilla, which appeared in the 1954 film "Godzilla", is also known as "Gojira" or "The Hydrogen Bomb Monster". This black behemoth, weighing 20,000 tons and standing 50 meters tall, dwelled in the deep sea. It is speculated to be a transitional creature that evolved from marine reptiles to terrestrial beasts. However, its habitat was destroyed by nuclear tests, causing it to land with hatred and devastate human cities. Tanks and missiles were harmless against it, but its high-temperature heat ray easily engulfed Tokyo in flames.
"ARTPLA Godzilla Re:Imagination" is sculpted by Shinobu Matsumura, who has worked at Kaiyodo for many years and is known as Japan's foremost creature sculptor. He reinterprets the classic scene from 70 years ago when Godzilla first landed in Tokyo, destroying railways and biting a train. The sculpt is not a reproduction based on the monster suit used in the film at the time, but rather a re-sculpted Godzilla with a greater sense of an ancient colossal creature, capturing the despair emanating from that scene with a vivid biting pose.
The kit comprises a total of 8 parts, meticulously sculpted to recreate Godzilla's rough skin texture, irregular coral-like dorsal fins, and terrifyingly fierce head. The brown and gray molded colors of the parts depict the reflection of the burning city lights. A special feature of this product is the use of internal structural parts, resembling a base body or skeleton, for areas such as the tail and legs. This not only maintains the strength of these sections but also allows for less noticeable seam lines once the precisely fitted skin parts are attached.
The base also features intricate sculpting to depict the area around Yurakucho Station, devastated by Godzilla. Although the molded color is the same as Godzilla's main body, self-painting will significantly bring out the subtle details.
