If you're into model kits – whether it's Gunpla or anything else – you know painting is where the real magic happens. It's the ultimate way to transform a basic build into something truly spectacular.
Get ready to have your mind blown! X user annkoromoti (@ufjmFR0BF7t5Jq7) just dropped a jaw-dropping custom paint job on Max Factory's PLAMAX 1/72 VF-1J Transformable Valkyrie (Hikaru Ichijyo Custom) from Macross. But this isn't just any anime-style paint job – they've gone full "cutaway" style, revealing the inner workings of the mech. The insane detail and creative concept have fans absolutely losing it!
For the uninitiated, the VF-1J is an upgraded version of the VF-1 Valkyrie, boasting a new head turret from Shinsei Industry. It doubles the ROV-20 laser cannons from one to two, while largely retaining the features of the standard VF-1A mass-production model. The "J" designation comes from its Japanese manufacturing, and this particular unit is famously piloted by protagonist Hikaru Ichijyo.
Annkoromoti is already a master at making 3D models look like 2D anime illustrations, creating that incredible "illustration paint job" effect.
But this time, their "Hikaru Ichijyo Valkyrie" isn't just anime-styled; they've taken it to another level by rendering half the fuselage in a "cutaway diagram" style, meticulously revealing its internal mechanics. The precision is absolutely mind-boggling! They referenced internal structure diagrams originally used for product promotion by the legendary artist Seimei Tanaka, then painstakingly recreated them by hand on the model.
Achieving this look means first sketching out the intricate details on the model, then meticulously hand-painting each section. It's clear this kind of work demands incredibly delicate and outstanding technical skill.
Since the original reference was only 2D flat diagrams, annkoromoti also shared photos from every angle – front, back, left, right – showcasing a flawless 360-degree masterpiece. This is where their personal skill truly shines, leaving viewers absolutely speechless.

Annkoromoti mentioned that while the model kit itself is fantastic, they simply wanted to challenge themselves with this unique paint style. Naturally, they're thrilled with the result and are already thinking about tackling more creative approaches in the future.
