Japanese model brand PLUM's character model kit series, "Plafia," has announced its latest product, "Doala," based on a Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) mascot, is scheduled for release in June 2026.
The mascot of the Nippon Professional Baseball team Chunichi Dragons, Doala, has been an active and highly popular character since 1994. His design is based on the popular koala from Nagoya's Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens at the time. Over the past 32 years, his appearance has been revamped several times, evolving from a plump, pink-faced koala to his current agile form. During team games, spectators often see Doala's highly conspicuous presence on the sidelines, engaging in various spontaneous interactions and performances, such as his "still art" where he stands motionless and stares forward, or his backflip challenge during the "Lucky 7" period after the bottom of the seventh inning. However, in recent years, the backflip tradition has been canceled due to Doala's physical condition.
The "Plafia Doala" features multi-color molded parts to create its unique koala-shaped head and slender body, dressed in the Chunichi Dragons uniform. Stickers are included to reproduce the Chunichi Dragons LOGO on the jersey, the exclusive back number "1994," and other designs. Each part can be removed directly without the need for nippers, and the overall number of parts has been minimized, allowing even beginners to easily assemble the approximately 10 cm tall Doala.
Thanks to Doala's flexible articulated joints throughout his body, the accessories also include four types of interchangeable hands, toast (his "salary"), a baseball bat, a bat-shaped megaphone, a writing board, a display base that can store these items, and a background cardboard. These allow fans to recreate his various hilarious famous scenes and cool backflip poses from his past performances on the field.
